After months of planning and design and countless iterations, the ultimate storage solution for Terraforming Mars is finally here. This massive three-color set is comprised of 54 individually printed pieces, designed to hold every official game product that exists for Terraforming Mars (as of August 2025)—every expansion, every promo, every board, every component upgrade set, as well as a number of unofficial extras. What's more, all of this fits perfectly in the Big Box without the Big Box Extension!
Here is the full list of what the insert holds: TM Base Game, Hellas & Elysium Board, Amazonis & Vastitas Board, Utopia & Cimmeria Board, Venus Next, Colonies, Prelude, Turmoil, Prelude 2, Milestones & Awards, Automa, 3D Tiles, Amazonis Planitia 3D Tiles, City Domes, Dual Layer Player Boards, Metal Cubes, Green Metallic Cubes, Alternate Color Plastic Player Cubes, Rover First Player Marker, Upgraded Trade Fleets (with room for custom trade fleets), All Promo Cards (with room for dozens more), Sleeve Set, Prelude 2 Sleeve Set, and the Automa Sleeve Set.
In addition, there is storage for all deprecated components—original cardboard terrain tiles, original plastic resources, original plastic player cubes, original player mats, original game markers, and a bin for outdated cards. And if that's not enough, the set includes 14 individual overlays, perfectly sized to snap on to the Turmoil Committee Board and Colonies mini-boards. Once again, all of this fits in the Big Box without the Big Box Extension.
The four card holder bins have removable dividers, allowing the option of storing expansions cards separately or together with the base cards. Cards are intended to be sleeved with the official TM sleeves, or sleeves of a similar thickness.
The original cardboard terrain tiles are stored in a single bin, while the 3D terrain tiles are spread across four bins, each with a lid to hold the tiles securely in place. (Small side bonus: It is no longer necessary to take the Nuclear Zone tile apart for storage.)
Each player has a bin for player cubes, and the two resource bins can be placed at opposite ends of the table within reach of all players.
Colonies, Turmoil, Milestones & Awards, and the Automa are each stored in a separate bin, which can be set aside when these options are not in play. The Colonies bin is sized to fit all the mini-boards with their overlays. It also has designated storage for the original trade fleets, upgraded trade fleets, and even a compartment for custom trade fleets, should you have them. The Turmoil bin includes a removable Delegate bin, with additional storage for the five alternate colors of delegates.
Another bin holds all small boards and instructions. This includes the Dual Layer Player Boards along with the original Player Boards, the Turmoil Committee Board with overlay, the Venus Next Tiles, and instructions booklets for the base game and all expansions. Two smaller bins hold various game markers (original and upgraded) and Milestones & Awards.
Finally, there are several bins for deprecated components—alternate color player cubes, original plastic resources, original cardboard tiles, and outdated cards / card dividers. These bins are meant to be placed at the bottom of the box, as they will not see much use. Alternatively, you may use these bins to store miscellaneous custom components that you may have collected.
This insert is fully compatible with the amazing Player Color Expansion by NoughtEbits. There is room for up to 10 player colors, each with 40 player cubes, 7 delegates, and 1 Martian player marker. The five colors that are on "active duty" are placed in the easy access bins for each player, while the five "off-duty" colors lay flat in storage bins (see photo). Be sure to order the NoughtEBits variant of the insert, which replaces the decorative Terraforming Mars spacer with a functional Cryo Bay for up to ten Martians. (The NoughtEBits token set is pictured for reference only and must be purchased separately.)
Fryx Games has announced that they are working on a campaign for Terraforming Mars. If and when this or any other new products are released, there will be plenty of room for an add-on to this insert, making use of the additional space from the Big Box Extension.
*The three TM novels (yes, there are books), the puzzle, and the unofficial player mats are not compatible with this insert—there are physical limits to what can be stored in a game box, even for TrayMaster.
